There are basically two formats of tanning beds: horizontal beds or vertical-stand up tanning booths. Since booths are lined with ultra violet bulbs in a 360 degree pattern, a tan is acheived in half the time than in a tanning bed. Many commercial tanning beds include high-pressure lamps in the face area if not the entire body area. High pressure tanning beds give a higher quality, faster tan since the lamps internal air pressure is higher than the conventional ultra violet lamps which then filters out some unwanted UVB rays and gives more UVA rays.

Another type of tanning booth is the Sunless Tanning Spray Booths. These booths contain high-pressure spray nozzles located 360 degrees around the interior of the booth and spray the enire body in under 10 seconds. Instead of a booth you can purchase a handheld spray-tanning unit which is a manual way of getting the same tan.
